16 Jan 2011 - Ikaho Onsen 伊香保

From Shibu Onsen, it was actually quite a journey to Ikaho Onsen
- Taxi from Shibu Onsen to Yudanaka train station
- Yudanaka train station to JR Nagano Station
- Shinkansen from JR Nagano to JR Takasaki
- JR Local train from Takasaki to Shibukawa
- Local bus from Shibukawa to Ikaho Onsen

You could probably cut 1 leg of transfer as there are direct buses from Takasaki to Ikaho Onsen, but as we had the JR East Pass, decided to make full use of it.

Along the famous stone step of Ikaho Onsen

Gunma is famous for konyaku ... totally delicious with miso paste

Found an old shop where an old man was patiently making these biscuits one by one. There are some herbs? which gives it a very nice bitter sweet taste. Looks as if the man has been making biscuits the same way, in the same seat for many many years

A very nice rest stop over looking the red bridge ... great place for a sake, oden to warm up the body.
Dad had an onsen egg for SNACK.

Finally found the "drinkable water source" of the Ikaho Onsen ... which is said to cure gout. Adults are not to take more than 600ml each time. The water tasted really weird ...  with a sourish metallic after taste. Reading the water properties analysis ... it contains fair bit of FE (Iron) and AL (Aluminum) which I guess explains the taste.

森秋旅館 Moriaki Ryokan
伊香保温泉 雨情の湯
〒377-0102 群馬県
渋川市伊香保町伊香保60

Moriaki was quite a big hotel, 7 floors in total. The rooms were very spacious and all the modern facilities with the traditional japanese style.
They have "golden" onsen which is an iron rich water.  There are 2 different baths:indoor (big bath) and outdoor (small bath); each had a different entrance.  Don't understand why they didn't connect the two baths.
Dinner was in a big dining hall on the 4th floor ... Konyakku sashimi was very yummy
