Vinyl Hunting aka Crate Digging

7-11 Nov 2025
The Vinyl and CD scene in Japan is still very much alive. Keeping documentation for my next trip.
I like the mix of small independent record stores as well as mega chain stores.

EuropeanPapa

Most challenging dig, a lot of stuff cramped into a small space, barely enough space for other customers to pass. Extremely friendly guy. Mix of my limited Japanese and his limited English, he managed to find a piece of Blossom Dearie from his backroom stash. https://maps.app.goo.gl/6e5wd6mqxLTQd2vH6

Ella Records

By far the most slick and chilled place I visited. Jazz and soul centric. Found a few good stuff at reasonable prices. https://maps.app.goo.gl/iZVijspR22eWcrBq9

RARE Nakanoten 中野店

Another cramped and challenging dig. Scored a bunch of 7" in their outdoor discount box for 100 yen each. https://maps.app.goo.gl/tSxPDrWu1GLXrqco7

Face Records MIYASHITA PARK

Not a very big store but has a very good collection of City pop. https://maps.app.goo.gl/3JPj3KwU3HnsYzVf6

Be-In Records

Did not buy anything. Good place for the serious collectors only. This is where you find multiple copies of first press of beatles at first press prices. https://maps.app.goo.gl/9dEEorutLU3m91JGA

UNIVERSOUNDS

Heard it was a good place. Was closed for the week when I visited. https://maps.app.goo.gl/Hj6NY3KwJ9x5xbMA8

Tower Records Shibuya タワーレコード 渋谷店

7 stories of music media and accessories. Nicely catalogued, tax-free. Good selection of used vinyl but would also be where i would go to for new vinyl too. https://maps.app.goo.gl/wuoTCQf4sbmQZZb36

レコファン RECOfan MAGNET by SHIBUYA109

English catalogue labels, well organised, reasonable pricing, tax free. Good amount of used vinyl. https://maps.app.goo.gl/NDdrjKz4SbJ79igw7

Disk Union

Visited 3 of their shops. There are probably 10+ disc unions in the area separated by genre.
Good that their grading is conservative. Got a few of their "B" rating and they have no surface scratches. The staff were willing to help take out the records to check the condition before buying.

a) Disk Union Shibuya Jazz Rare Groove CD Record Store https://maps.app.goo.gl/7x3LfDQwNBDxMnpL8

b) Union Record Shibuya Parco https://maps.app.goo.gl/V9JapJRha6Stw6fe8

c) Disk Union Shinjuku CD・Record Accessory Shop https://maps.app.goo.gl/mv6H4kWb2Qbo3qeR9

HMV

For all the mega store, my experience with HMV was the worst. Their grading were not too accurate, with several rated as excellent but the records were in less then perfect condition. The staff was also pretty clueless on how to handle these situations.
