George Town Makan

11 Jun 2026
Starting off the day with a good Roti Canai Telok.

Went into a shop for gelato and ended up having 2 durians, 白玉珍珠 (penang only bitter variety) and a random 老树.

Modern style beef noodles for lunch, then cooling off in the modern industrial design of Norm micro roastery.

Peranakan Museum, George Town

11 Jun 2026
Worth the time here, to experience the scale of wealth the baba business men had. Impressive artifacts and nicely setup.

The jewel and art artifacts made of blue kingfisher feathers were also interesting.

Street Hawker Vibes

11 Jun 2026
Street hawker vibes are still well and alive in Penang. Wok hei from the kway teow and oyster omelette was great.

George Town to Balik Pulau

12 Jun 2026
After breakfast, Batik factory walkabout and shopping.

Enroute, 2 more durian stops.
- 8321 Durian Plantation, not the cheapest but certainly the widest variety. We had the Kung Bao and the Tupai King (which is rare and expensive, but somehow did not impress).

After note: My personal take is that Tupai King is probably another tiktok elevated status, not really worth its price.

- 2nd stop at Thor durian house, had a red prawn as most other durians there are reserved or sold out.

Quick stop at the nutmeg farm before check-in at Bao Sheng durian farm stay.

Bao Sheng Durian Farm

12 Jun 2026
Session 1 at Bao Sheng, omakase of 7 variety of organic durians that are in season - 604,红虾,坤宝,葫芦, 黑刺,白玉珍珠 (capri),青皮.

Overall, I like the 青皮 and 604 the best for their fermented alcoholic taste and bitterness.

Breakfast at the Durian Table

13 Jun 2026
After a short walk in the plantation, breakfast at the durain table. This morning's platter of freshly collected durians : 604, D2, WuGong 蜈蚣, Musang King, 老树 hulu, red prawn, green skin, black thorn, capri.

Numb durian - 604 which are collected within the last few hours that gives a slight tingling sensation in the mouth.

Green Skin is still my top choice.
Other more interesting variety are the
- Hulu for the dense chocolate taste
- Capri for it pearly white color with bitter taste
- Wugong for its weird shaped spikes
- D2, bitter, slightly alcoholic fermented
taste. Also considered rare, generally only available from old trees, as new trees are difficult to flower.

Friendly worms in various durians... evidence that they are organic 😆

A more delicate version of Nonya food. The restaurant hostess is a fellow ex-Singaporean Jenny, who has since relocated here.

Wrapping up Trip with more Makan

13-14 Jun 2026
The famous fried Char Koay Kak 粿角 (aka fried carrot cake),nice texture and wok hei.

Old school Hokkien prawn noodles packed with unami and sweetness. The Lor Mee is the interesting one, not as starchy as SG version and I think they use the prawn broth as a base.
