Trip Planning and Getting There

18-19 Sep 2024
First time to Changi Terminal 4 and first time flying Korean Air. Of course, they serve excellent bibimbap on board. Some family wanted our seats to be together, so we got shifted to the bassinet seats with extra leg room.

Short transit in Korea. Transfer was super smooth, 30 min gate-to-gate. Starbucks seems like the only choice for caffeine fix. Impressed with the Korean's operational efficiency both in-flight and airport operations.

So far, we only have good things to say of Korean Air.

19-20 Sep 2024
About a 1.5 to 2 hours car ride from airport to hotel. Check-in to Best Western Tuushin Hotel with a great view of the city square and a decent sized room.

First impression of Mongolia? For sure, air pollution and bad traffic was not what i had in mind.

Chojin Lama Temple Museum

19 Sep 2024
While it is called a museum, it is actually 1 of the 27 temples in Mongolia that has been recognised by UNESCO, which are more than 100 years old and having the interior of the temple and their artifacts preserved in its original form.
Nested in the middle of the city, literally surrounded by tall modern buildings.
Each of the temple halls were small, no more than 20x20m but were overwhelmingly packed with artifacts from early 17-19 century, some of which were made by the Bogh and his disciplines.
Sorry, no photos inside the buildings but definitely worth a visit if you are into Buddhist artifacts and fine arts.

Thank You, Nassa, our guide who happened to run into the director of the museum, and opened up more doors for us ๐Ÿ˜€.

Midway up the path, there is a large prayer wheels that you can spin to get a number to tell your "fortune" on the signboards further up the hill.

Cross the "Bridge that brings you to another world" covered in autumn gold.
Up another flight of steps and finally at the meditation hall.

Ulgii Hotel and Around

21-22 Sep 2024
It took me 2 days to figure out the name of the hotel we are in. In the 10-story building, it houses 3 different hotels and some other business establishments, i.e. each few floors of the same building, was actually a different hotel ... ๐Ÿ˜…

Hotel overlooks the square with a great view. Room facilities are ok. Restaurant service is another matter. They have a habit of not clearing their tables the night before, so if you are at breakfast early, do expect messy left-overs from last night.

Eagle Festival Site and Around

21 Sep 2023 – 22 Sep 2024
The main reason for my visit to west Mongolia was to attend this event. It is an annual gathering of about 20+ Eagle Hunters for 2 days of competitions around the scenic Lake Tolbo.

Casual festival mood as the folks set up stalls of traditional handicrafts and foods along side the competition arena.

Lunch at the Festival

21-22 Sep 2024
For both days, we decided to have lunch at the various "pop-up" stalls at the event. Turns out quite nice and saves the 40mins drive back to town restaurants.
Choices included: Beef shish kebab, bbq sheep's tail (very yummy and guaranteed collagen packed ๐Ÿ‘Œ), Khuushuur (freshly fried "dumplings") which are more like flat bread, must go with their chinese ไธไธ chilli, Beef gloush rice, meat ball soup.

Kazakh Eagle Hunter Family Visit

24 Sep – 3 Nov 2024
In this trip, we had the honor of meeting Jennisbek, the man in the Nat Geo book EAGLE.

I would describe him as a huge man of quiet strength ๐Ÿ˜†, and a deep bond with his eagle, Aga.

Was definitely a worthwhile experience, going through his thoughts on eagles, how eagles are released at their prime, the wild eagles vs the competition eagles and his view of the book.

18 images

Lunch with Kazakh Family

24 Sep 2024
The welcome snack were homemade dough, dried curd, sweet curd, clotted cream and ghee from yak milk. Traditional hot milk tea.

Jennisbek's mother prepared lunch, which was a huge plate of rice (not sure, kind of salted or buttered rice?), potato and meat. Very appetising and very FULL.

Hustai National Park Tourist Resort

After a quick lunch at the airport, we made good time on the road and arrived at Hustai National Park. Best time to go Takhi spotting is late afternoon to sunset..

28 images

Takhi Spotting

25 Sep 2023 – 25 Sep 2024
It was a good day for wildlife spotting. Hustai is home to the stockily built wild horse, Takhi (a.k.a Przewalski's Horse).

We sighted 5 groups of Takhi today. Was told that the lead stallion of the first herd is called Armi. So lucky that they came down to the road and got up close and personal.

A large herd of at least 50-100 red deer grazing and making mating calls echoed the valley.

Corsac fox decided to run across our car window as we were leaving the area.

Kharakhorum Museum

26 Sep 2024
Many good exhibits and info of the ancient capital, which Chinggis Khan ordered to be built. It is now inscribed as a UNESCO cultural landscape.

The "to-scale" model was pieced together by the German/Mongolia team was useful in understanding what the ancient city was like.

What struck me most of this ancient city is how it's great conquerer embraced the early multi-religion concept, wtih a mosque, monastery and church all within the city walls.

I did not pay for camera fees, so no photo inside. You will have to come see for yourself.

Flaming Cliff

29 Sep 2024
Our timing was good. We got there 90 mins before sunset to see the cliffs in their famous blazing red.

More importantly, this was the exact spot where Roy Chapman Andrew discovered the first fossilised dinosaur egg when one of his assistants rolled off a cliff.

The museum is located in Dalanzadgad, the biggest town in Gobi. The museum is funded by the mining company in Gobi.

In spite of the fact that only 1 or 2 exhibits are "real" dinosaur artefacts, it was still a very good museum which provides lots of information on the various dinosaur eggs and fossils found in the Gobi.
