Onuma 大沼国定公園

Trekking and soaking up the serenity of Onuma Quasi National Park (大沼国定公園)
15 Dec 2013 - Trekking the Onuma Quasi National Park (大沼国定公園)

The Onuma Koen stop was a 20 min ride from Hakodate. We got the more expensive rapid train tickets by mistake. Not too necessary if we had timed things well with the local trains and could save half the train fares.

While I usually find the various famous lakes in Hokkaido are overrated ... Onuma Park was an exception.

We were so lucky to see 2 shades of the park in 1 trip ... it was snowing heavily when we arrived but the sun broke through the clouds for an hour during late morning, the entire park changes to a totally different tone

Some of the local produce (mochi and milk) which Onuma is famous for

Located one of the restaurant serving the Onuma Beef. Since beef was the specialty, we ordered the 200g steak and the Gyu-don, both were excellent. While not as marbled as wagyu, the meat was bursting with flavour and a lot more reasonable priced at ¥2000 for 200g.

Also tried their local craft brew in a 1L format. Nope we are not bring back the glass bottle no matter how nice it looks ... there is no more luggage space !

The ramen and fried rice set for the non-beef eaters.
Note: Do go early as they close at 13:30

Getting back to the station ... one last stop for squid ink ice cream, apple chips, daikon snack and fresh apples before we hop on the train back to Hakodate
