Yuzawa and Ponshu-kan

Took a day off snowboarding to enjoy the seasonal Maitake mushroom and Hegi Soba of Yuzawa, shopping in Echigo Yuzawa Station followed by more Sake tasting at Ponshu-kan Sake Museum.

Making use of the Prince Naeba Hotel Free shuttle bus, the first bus leaves the hotel at 1100hrs (about 30-50mins depending on road conditions). Reservations are required from hotel to town (not required the other way round). Still not able to figure out why the hotel only takes reservations from 7pm the day before and not anything earlier ?

Arriving at Echigo Yuzawa, we spend a few hours shopping at the station.

Since we are in Niigata, how can we not buy the famous Koshihikari rice of Uonuma (鱼沼市)

The Sake Section ... don't know where to start ???

When you are done with the snack sampling ... there are another 100+ type of Soy Sauce ... ever tried soy sauce tasting ? Think my taste buds were beginning to be totally confused.

The tourist information counter recommended this Soba Shop ... and it was a good recommendation !
3 mins from the station from the east exit

Hegi Soba (soba made of buckwheat and seaweed layout one mouthful at a time) and my favorite tempura Maitake (舞茸) !

After lunch, we had to hurry a bit as we were running late for our 3pm appointment. Luckily it was only a 5-10mins walk to Shirataki Sake Brewery from the Station. Certainly no lack of snow here ... which provides for the ground water to make sake.

If you have 1 to 2 hours to spare in Echigo Yuzawa , I would highly recommend that you visit them. Do note that reservations are required as the staff needs to prepare to bring you around.

Ponshu-kan ぽんしゅ館
After walking back to station, we decide to take it all the way and continue with Sake Tasting at the Ponshu-kan which has 100+ Niigata sakes on automated taps. 500 yen for 5 tokens. OK not all are sake, there is a small section of umeshu and some that tends towards more sweet syrupy liqueurs, but definitely enough to drink.

Food here was better that what you find in Prince Naeba Hotel. We bought a variety of food from various stall and ate at the communal seats available.

Caught the 1750 bus back to the  hotel. Rested and ready for 1 more day of boarding.
