2026-03 South Korea Spring

22 Mar – 22 Apr 2026
Our inaugural trip to South Korea. Spending a month to catch the Cherry Blossom season and travelling along the east coast up north.

Highlights - Cherry Blossoms

26 Mar – 22 Apr 2026
Cherry blossoms were the primary objective of our spring trip. Blessed to be able to witness their full glory in Jinhae, Suncheon, Tongyeong and many other places.

Peak bloom last for 10 days, mother nature's lesson that beauty is transient. As the sun sets, orange hue on the trees, petals gently fall, as we watch the season draws to a close.

Highlights - Springs Flowers

23 Mar – 19 Apr 2026
We soon learn that Spring in Korea had so much more flora to offer ... Plum, Pear, Peach Blossom in various shades of white, pink, red. Giant Magnolia trees in full white and purple. The yellow of Sansyure and Daffodils, the red and pink Camellia and so much more.

Singapore Changi Airport T4

22 Mar 2026
Having a late dinner at the airport, and hopefully would feel less hungry on a 1.30am flight. What Singapore food would we miss for a month? Tough choices ...

Last minute catch-up on our dramas before we go on the road :P

Singapore - Incheon - Gwangju

23 Mar 2026
Smooth flight and had a tasty breakfast onboard before landing.

Guess it was "post BTS" fever, we cleared customs in about 15 mins, no crazy queues like what we saw on the internet.
Had to try multiple ATMs, before finding one that want to works with my card.
Sorted that out and onwards to the next travel segment.

More snooze time, catching up for the red-eye flight. 4hr direct bus ride to Gwangju with a 15 mins toilet stop at Hongseong Reststop.

Gwangju Tea Ceremony

23 Mar 2026
Took an afternoon walk with our guide to this tea house which also has its own tea factory.

Ordered their popular matcha with red ginseng and the huang cha (yellow tea).
Ceremony here are more relax than the Chinese or the Japanese.

Tea "espresso" was the most interesting, just enough water to wet the green tea leaves to extract about a 5ml sip. Very "smooth and creamy" and burst of unami.

Gwangju - Gajok Hoegwan

23 Mar 2026
Our first full course korean set dinner at this 40 year-old restaurant serving the specialities of the Jeolla Province.

Pretty unique are their signature dishes
- Fermented skate fish, eaten with kimchi and pork belly
- Sashimi flounder layered with preserved veg and raw garlic
- Barley-aged Dired Yellow Croaker
- Nakji octopus with apple and cucumber salad
- Jello-like marinated carb

Boseong - Daehan Tea Plantation

25 Mar 2026
A rainy morning, so we did not get to see the usual bright green fields. Instead we got a sense of misty and clam as we hiked the tea fields in the light rain.

Love the giant magnolia trees among the fields. Of course, we had to end the walk with the best macha ice cream in the area.

Boseong - Tea Museum

25 Mar 2026
A quick visit to the museum, getting an overall of the history, 101s of green tea and some interactive displays.

The viewpoint cafe was closed, but the views were always available.

Guide was very kind and big-hearted. We stopped to say hello to the locals and giving their doggies a treat before proceeding to the next stop.

Boseong - Nakji Octopus

25 Mar 2026
For lunch, another local delicacy, Nakji octopus caught off the boseong mudflats.

Equally flavourful was the pen razor clam as a soup. Firm texture with creamy taste, sort of similar to scallops. Sweet unami in the broth.

This store does their own catch and all banchans are authentic made in the stall.

Bibong - Reservoir Hike

25 Mar 2026
Simple hike around the reservoir. The area used to be a small village of about 10 families. They were relocated to make way for this reservoir to supply the nearby rice farms.

Historically, the town area mines a special stone that is used for traditional floor heating. The stones are transported from the mountains using bullock carts, hence the symbols of the bull and cart all over town.

34 images1 video

Choru Vinegar Park

25 Mar 2026
The primary reason we came to hike this reservoir was to visit this vinegar park.
The building spots a modern minimalist design. Designed to be "hidden", which explains why I cannot a full-view shot of the building.

Situated in the vicinity of good ground water and good local rice, making it a good candidate to produce high quality vinegar.

We pre-ordered the tasting set,
- vinegar drink (Oolong yuzu, berry vinegar) with a set of vinegar snacks.
- Rice Lees with Red Bean, rice cake balsamic mango vinegar, rice crisp, pumpkin seed with vinegar, sesame with yuzu.

Of course, you need to check out the toilet, a tastely designed "vinegar themed" outfit.

Boseong - Cockles Dinner

25 Mar 2026
Cockles harvested from the mudflats of boseong, another local speciality. Spicy cockles salad, cockles with egg, steamed cockles, tempura cockles ...

Discovered a very efficient tool to open the cockles.

26 Mar 2026
Really appreciate our guide Veronica Kim
, who timed the visit in the late afternoon so that we can attend the drum ceremony at 1820hrs. πŸ‘ That was definitely a highlight for us.

The ceremony was conducted by 3 monks who took turns at the giant drum. After which, another monk then rang the temple bell 33 times to complete the daily ritual.

Suncheon Wetland Reserve

27 Mar 2026
We decided to reverse the usual recommended route and do the Wetland Reserve prior to the National Garden.

The boardwalks in the reeds field were very enjoyable. Enjoying the vastness of the area and the intermittent flocks of ducks flying overhead.

37 images

Suncheon - Hooded Cranes

27 Mar 2026
Hooded Cranes were feeding in the rice fields, about 100+ when we arrived. We are obviously not hardcore birders, did not get there early enough to see entire flock of 800+ πŸ˜€

Suncheon - Crab Lunch Set

27 Mar 2026
To save time, we decided to check out the cluster of restaurant just outside of the wetland carpark

Ordered a Blue Carb marinated set and a mudskipper stew.

The crab roe on rice was awesome. Tasted like very creamy uni. The mudskipper stew has quite strong an unami smell, surprisingly tasted much better than it looked. πŸ˜†

Took a SkyCube which connects the Wetland Reserve to the National Garden.

The garden was extremely huge and very well maintained. Tulips for spring. Strolling along the river under the willow and cherry blossoms.

Relaxing with an ice americano in the french garden cafe, before we continue to explore the other country themed gardens.

Suncheon to Tongyeong

28 Mar 2026
No direct bus from Suncheon to Tongyeong. Did a transfer in Jinju. Caught our bus with 5 mins to spare ... phew πŸ˜†

Tongyeong is a small town, so can only buy tickets at the bus terminal manned- ticket booth. Even the self-service kiosk in Jinju did not list the ticket, no wonder I could not find it in the online booking systems.

Tongyeong - Grilled sea eel

28 Mar 2026
Happy to chance upon this place.
Was looking for a sashimi place, came across this family-owned restaurant, so decided to venture. We now know that Tongyeong is also famous for fresh sea eels.

Made an initial order, but finally deciphered the menu and managed to change our order to the coastal rock eel.

Dramtic rigormortis as the eels are being grilled😬. The smell of grilled eel fats dripping on charcoal, and its chewy texture is just amazing. Dip sesame oil with a dash of salt, wrap with a perilla leaf ... woo hoo.

Tongyeong - Lunch at Jungang Market

29 Mar 2026
Comms was quite challenging in the market. Glad to find a friendly store owner who was happy to use the translator. Finally ordered
- 1 x mackerel sashimi
- 9 x Meongge (aka sea pineapples aka sea squits)
- 5 horned conch

The mackerel had a firm crunchy texture. Conch shell was chewy and the squits was a tad "full of the sea" taste. Pairing it with whatever soju they had there ... lol

Tongyeong to Jinhae

31 Mar – 2 Apr 2026
There was no intercity bus that served this area, so we decided to take a taxi from Tongyeong to Jinhae. 1hr 15mins ride for about 80k won. Saved a lot of time and 3 rounds of luggage transfers.

The scenic taxi ride into town through tunnels of cherry blossom trees looks very hopeful that we arrived in time for the peak blooms.

Quick lunch around the Jinhae station area with some Jeju specialities before we took the free shuttle bus to the festival area.

Jinhae Festival Area

31 Mar 2026
A first recee to the festival area. 3.2 million visitors are expected this week. Despite the crowd, the mood was festive and everyone was politely queuing up at the popular photo spots.

Will be back tomorrow morning to check it out with less crowd.

Traditional Hanwoo Dinner

31 Mar 2026
Decided that we should try a beef house with a more traditional setting.

This place has only 1 thing on the menu, an assorted platter of Hanwoo cuts of grade 1++/1+, and the complimentary beef blood soup as part of the banchans.πŸ‘

Had to take over the grill, as the staff was going too fast.

Streets of Jinhae

31 Mar – 1 Apr 2026
We had the luxury of 2 days in Jinhae. Moving away from the main festival area, slowly exploring the back lanes, and resting in quiet cafes as we try to slow down.

Every street was filled with cherry blooms and naturally everything there was cherry blossom themed.

Cherry Blossom Beef Ribs

1 Apr 2026
Trying out a more "fine dining" styled Hanwoo restaurant to compare it with the traditional experience.

Ordered 2 set lunches so that we can compare their signature Hanwoo Beotkkot-galbi (λ²šκ½ƒκ°ˆλΉ„) ( aka their cherry blossoms hanwoo beef ribs, marinated with honey harvested from cherry blossom, only available in this restaurant in Changwon)
vs Myeongga Special (λͺ…κ°€νŠΉμ„ ), their standard marinated beef ribs.

I am never a great fan of marinates but I must say I am impressed. It was mildly sweet/tart and compliments the meat taste without overwhelmingly it.

Banchans were also well made, Iced kimchi, Gondre rice with thistle leaf and perilla oil, etc.

Busan

2-4 Apr 2026
Back to the city for the next 4 days.
After hanging out in small towns for the last 10 days, everything just felt a bit too fast paced for us πŸ˜†.

Hotel location was good, 300m to the subway and bustops. Pretty straight forward with Naver app and a Tmoney card for subway and buses.

Momos Coffee Flagship Store

2-4 Apr 2026
40 mins subway ride from our hotel.
Ranked 22 globally in the World Top 100 Coffee Shops. The premises were crazy huge. The main building is a traditional hanok, with 2 other modern dual story houses surrounding a garden center.

Coffee was good, both the pourover and the espresso. A big variety of bakes.

Vibes were a tad chaotic, long queue to order, baristas were probably overwhelmed as coffee took more that 30-45 mins to be ready. Too many folks eagerly buzzing around trying to get their IG worthy shots πŸ˜…, so pretty difficult to chilled out at this place.

Took home the Busan Blend drip bags for the rest of our journey.

Busan - Coast Hike to Gongsu Village

3 Apr 2026
After the temple visit, we found a track which takes us along the coast, around Sirangsan mountain to Gongsu Village. Easy walk on dirt tracks for about 2km.

In Gongsu area, several stalls selling Straw-fired eels, so we did a random pick.

On hindside, we should have listened to their recommendation of 1 portion straw fired and 1 portion seasoned. But we were feeling too sauced out in the past week. Ended up that it was quite overwhelming with a single flavour as the eel was pretty fatty.

Continue our coastal walk to Songjeong Beach.

$25 elevator tickets to get up there excluding drinks, so we passed. πŸ€”

Sea snails are also one of their specialities. Stir-fried with bean sprouts and a creamy nutty sauce, guessing ground perilla seeds. We loved the sauce.
The snails tasted very different from escargot, they were sweet and literally burst with a sea-filled taste.

One of the best BBQ pork we had to-date. Great meat quality in a modern setting, and most importantly great enthusiastic staff that helped grilled the meat to perfection.

Went well with the Hallasan Soju from Jeju and awesome banchans. Yummy.

Busan - Pork Soup Rice

2-5 Apr 2026
There are so many stores in Busan serving pork meat soup with rice. While this dish originated here, each store has a different style, clear vs milky soup base, traditional vs fusion.

Overall, we prefer this modern fusion style, which we later found out was also a michelin select stall.

The original plan was to have lunch at one of these crab restaurant. While it was quite early, 12.30pm, most of the restaurant along that row did not want to take in customers, guessing that they were catering to group bookings by the various tourist buses there.

A Cozy Corner next door for coffee. Standard requirement in korea that every cafe needs a 2nd floor with a scenic view.

Not sure why, they had a huge espresso machine, but could only make an Americano but not an espresso?

Pohang - Hike to Igari

10 Apr 2026
After figuring that the bus only runs twice a day, it means another coastal hike.

4km along the coast from Odohang Port to the Igari Anchor Observatory.

Passing by more Hometown Cha Cha Cha landmarks, the red light house and Yoon's dental clinic.

Obviously this anchor-shaped jetty was also another k-drama filming site. Got no idea which drama this is, my k-drama backlog building up πŸ˜….

Pohang to Gangnueng

11 Apr 2026
Booked the train ride from Pohang to Gangneung. Labelled as the most scenic coastal train ride as this is the route where the train goes nearest to the ocean.

Gangnueng - Hotel Gyeongpo Soo

11-14 Apr 2026
Physically not the best of hotels we had for this trip, broken cupboards and split flooring etc. Folks are friendly and location is good, 20m to the beach and lots of restaurant around.

Guess the favourite hobby here is wave watching ...

Reminder, do not come to Gyengpo beach on a weekend, the traffic jam is crazy and all hotels are booked up. Much nicer experience on a weekday.

Gangneung - Chodang Tofu Street

11 Apr 2026
Most restaurant here serve the famous Chadong Tofu. Made with domestic soya and deep seawater.

The stall we went to was closed for renovation. Saw 3 korean ladies dashed across the road to a restaurant, decided to follow them and landed up in this authentic, traditional looking restaurant.

Ordered the set so that we could try all the different types of tofu, firm, soft, flavoured, and in a spicy hotpot stew. The tofu taste and texture is really outstanding.

Gangnueng - Seafood Dinner

11 Apr 2026
Gyeongpo beach is lined with nothing but seafood stalls. For us, every stall looks and sells the same stuff, cant really differentiate, so close your eyes and do a random pick.

Eventually, we want to eat the grilled hagfish. We ordered the set but soon realised it was not a good choice as the set meant for "tourist" who dont eat much raw or spicy, which is not our case. Fish was ok but the rest of the dishes were average at best.

Gangnueng - Bohemian Coffee

12 Apr 2026
A trip to visit Park I-Chun's Bohemian Cafe. The man who is known as the 1st generation barista that started the artisan coffee culture in korea.

Liked his philosophy and roasting style. Both pourovers I tried retained a good body (not overly light) and still had much flora and nuances. His style is labelled as "Italian/Japanese".

There is another Bohemian roasters outlet, but this is the main branch where he still serves on Thursday to Sunday only. Not an easy place to get to, I guess that why many described it as a coffee pilgrimage type of place πŸ˜†

Gangneung - Flounder Mulhoe

12 Apr 2026
Sacheon mulhoe village seems like the best place to try this dish. Almost every stall by the sea port sells Hoetjop (sliced raw fish), no clue which stall to try.

A big crowd of locals overflowing at this stall, seems like a good indication. We bravely wrote our names on the reservation list. Only English name on the list, another good sign that it is the real deal πŸ˜…

A specialist stall with only 3 items on the menu, uses only flounder and surely did not disappoint in terms of taste.

Super yummy cold raw fish slices in a spicy and tangy soup. πŸ˜‹
Also order the rockfish seaweed soup, nice thick broth.
The banchan also had an interesting local corn.
Definitely worth the ride here.

Gangneung - Sacheon Port to Gyeongpo Beach

12 Apr 2026
The local bus runs only every few hours. 6 km stroll along the beach to get back to the hotel. More wave watching at breakwaters and more beach IG photo booth.

Stopping by Terarosa Forest Cafe for an espresso and a short exploration of the Sunpo wetlands.

Sokcho - Dongmyeong Port to Abai Village

14 Apr 2026
Exploring the view points around Dongmyeong port.

Pre-lunch snack of Tempura 🍀 and perilla leaf along the harbour.

An easy walk to Abai village, an aging village which used to be part of north korean.

Sokcho - Abai Village

14 Apr 2026
The specialities here are the squid sundae and the Abai Sundae, of pig blood, ground meat, various veg and glutinous rice. The Abai makgeolli (a lighter and sour style) made a great pairing for the sausages with the fermented pollack.

If you are very full, stuff the last piece in, and still thinks that it is extremely tasty, then it passes the litmus test of being called "Extremely Good" ... LOL.

Goseong - DMZ Observatory

15 Apr 2026
Last minute decision to visit the eastern part of the DMZ. No tunnels here but probably quieter compare to the DMZ trip from Seoul.

Passing the checkpoints that serves as "tank blocker", where they could drop this concrete wall to seal off the road in an "emergency".

Strolling through the DMZ museum with various artifacts, propaganda leaflets, etc from the war. They imported a piece of the original berlin wall, symbolising the desire for unification.

Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side and totally fogged out the North Korea view.

Thanks to a great guide Chan that made the trip relaxing and informative. [Tripadvisor Link]

Goseong - Wanggok Village

15 Apr 2026
Lunch at a restaurant ran by a 3rd generation owner for typical north korean cusines.

After which, we went to the Wangkok Village. Home to 50 families, with subsidy from the government, preserved the original korean architecture. Set in a totally serene environment surrounded by mountains, it stops time.

We had a relax rest and chit chat by the lotus pond ... till we were ready to go back to sokcho.

I especially like this temple carved into the rock. Understood that they selected the largest rock that is shaped like a 木鱼 to crave into.

We were not successful trying to shake the Heundeul Rock (Rocking stone) πŸ˜‚

Seoul - Arrived and Check-in

18-20 Apr 2026
The express bus from Sokcho to Seoul was efficient and very comfortable.

Traffic jams, hot weather, crowded tourist streets, we were jolted back into reality πŸ˜…

Sunbee Hotel is as good as what the reviews online said. Good location and the front desk folks were fantastic and well prepared with all the necessary local area information in hardcopy and online. πŸ‘

Did not managed to secure a reservation to the audeum museum, guess it would be a next trip then.

Gwanghuamun & Itaewon

18-21 Apr 2026
Gwanghuamun Palace is closed today but we took a walk around the exterior compound and the museum of King Sejeong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin.

Realised that we did not try jjajangmen in korea yet, so decided to seek out a Chinese restaurant for lunch.

Short walk around Itaewon, quick shopping.
